Belgian King and Queen at the Monaco Royal Wedding

Queen Paola of Belgium and King Albert II of Belgium attend the religious ceremony of the Royal Wedding of Prince Albert II of Monaco to Princess Charlene of Monaco in the main courtyard at the Prince's Palace on July 2, 2011 in Monaco. The Roman-Catholic ceremony follows the civil wedding which was held in the Throne Room of the Prince's Palace of Monaco on July 1. With her marriage to the head of state of the Principality of Monaco, Charlene Wittstock has become Princess consort of Monaco and gains the title, Princess Charlene of Monaco. Celebrations including concerts and firework displays are being held across several days, attended by a guest list of global celebrities and heads of state.

2 Apr 1920 – The Senate accepts the principle of women’s vote.

2 Apr 1937 – the first Eugène Ysaye Violin Competition opens. David Oistrakh is the winner of this contest named after the famous violinist composer and which will later be renamed Queen Elisabeth Music Competition.

2 Apr 1968 – A fire at the 16th century Antwerp Cathedral burnt a great number of artistic masterpieces. Luckily they were able to save the works of Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens.

3 Apr 1955 – 39 people, among whom 22 children die in a fire at the movie theater Cinéma Rio, in Sclessin

4 Apr 1826 - Zénobe-Théophile Gramme (4 Apr 1826-20 Jan 1901): Birth of Belgian-born French electrical engineer and inventor (1869) of the Gramme dynamo, a continuous-current electrical generator that gave principal impetus to the development of electric power.

6 Apr 1961: Jules Bordet (6 Apr 1961-13 Jun 1870): Birth of Jules Jean Baptiste Vincent Bordet, the Belgian bacteriologist and immunologist who discovered (1895) the complement, a complex of proteins in the blood that causes the destruction of foreign cells in an immune response.

8 Apr 1875 – Birth of Albert Leopold Clement Marie Meinrad, at the Palais de la Régence, Place Royale in Brussels, the 5^th child of Prince Philippe, Counte of Flanders, brother of Léopold II, and Princess Marie de Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. He will become King Albert Ist.

9 Apr 1835 – Birth of Leopold, Louis, Philippe, Marie, Victor, son of Leopold I and of Louise-Marie, in Brussels. He will become Leopold II

13 Apr 1930 – The Belgian soccer team crushes the French 6 to 1.

16 Apr 1996 - Johan Museeuw wins Paris-Roubaix. Johan Museeuw is a monumental cyclist. He was born in Flanders, near the coast, on October 13^th, 1965.

18 Apr 1951 - Belgium signs the Treaty of Paris which creates European Community of Coal and Steel (CECA).

20 Apr 1899 – The automobile driver Camille Jenatzy reaches the 100 km/h mark aboard an electrical propelled car named "Jamais contente" (Never content)!

22 Apr 1915 - The first time toxic gases are used in warfare. A yellowish-green cloud of chlorine gas crept towards the allied trenches at Steenstrate. Canadian and Frech soldiers were the first victims

25 Apr 1924 - Inauguration of a ferry-boat linking Zeebrugge to Harwich.

26 Apr 1910 – The painter Blandin and a student by the name of Develoose create the first Belgian cartoons.

27 Apr 1905 – Opening of the 1905 World Fair in Liège dedicated to Belgian research since 1830. Prince Albert, future king of the Belgians, opens the festivities.

The first bathyscaphe was dubbed FNRS- 2, named after the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique, and built in Belgium from 1946 and 1948 by Auguste Piccard. The first journeys were detailed in the Jacques Cousteau book The Silent World. In 1960 Trieste, carrying Piccard's son Jacques Piccard and Lt. Don Walsh, reached the deepest known point on the Earth's surface, the Challenger Deep, in the Mariana Trench. As of 2010, these two remain the only people to reach this extreme depth. No manned vessel has ever repeated this feat. In 1995, the Japanese sent an unmanned submersible to this depth, Kaiko, but it was later lost at sea. Most recently, in 2009, a team from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution sent a robotic submarine named Nereus to the bottom of the trench.
